ABOUT HEN’S TEETH
Hen’s Teeth is a fantastic and unique American duo featuring Janie Rothfield (fiddle, clawhammer banjo, vocals) and Nathan Bontrager (cello, fiddle, vocals)- two powerhouse and inventive American roots musicians who specialize in traditional and original American traditional style music.
Hen’s Teeth music is firmly rooted in the American Old Time tradition but takes on a completely unique sound that is a result of their own inventive, soulful, wild and improvisational approach to their music. This is American roots music at its most dynamic, full of power, soul, creativity and whimsy.
Janie and Nathan will take you on a musical journey with a magical combination of fiddles, cello, clawhammer banjo and fine singing that makes the musical sparks fly! Plus they are really funny!
Janie is based in Philadelphia and Nathan currently lives in Cologne, Germany and since forming HEN'S TEETH in 2016, they have done two tours in Europe performing at venues and teaching music workshops in England, Scotland, Belgium, Holland and Germany. In Spring 2016, they fit in, mid-tour, time to record their first CD, titled OFF THE CUFF AND ON THE FLY, which features traditional and original tunes and songs (many written by Jane Rothfield) that pay homage to the old time traditional music they love, while stretching the sounds, rhythms, harmonies and texture of that music that is deep and unique!
Their next tour in in June, 2017, takes them to Scotland, England, Germany and Holland. They will also add in a recording session during that tour, with a brand new trad based string quartet project-details coming soon!
Summer 2017 sees Hen's Teeth performing both on the American East Coast and Pacific Northwest, where they are the featured artists at the Zigzag Old Time Music Weekend, in Zigzag Oregon.

About Nathan Bontrager
Nathan is a unique and versatile musician with musical chops rooted firmly in the traditional old time and folk genres. As well as being a world-class classical, jazz and experimental music cellist, he has performed throughout Europe and the US as an old time fiddler, clawhammer banjo and guitar player. Nathan has collaborated with musicians like Brian Slattery, Aaron Jonah Lewis and Harry Bolick, and regularly plays with the Ol’ Timey Messengers in Paris and the UK/US traditional band, Root & Branch. Nathan hails from the North-Eastern USA but currently lives in Germany, where he has studied Baroque Cello and Viola da Gamba in Masters programs at the Essen and Koeln conservatories. In addition to Appalachian and other traditional folk forms, Nathan is quite active in the improvised and new music scenes throughout Europe. Recent and upcoming projects include touring with Marc Ribot and the Young Philadelphians, concerts with Gerry Hemmingway, a world premier of a new composition by composer, Glenn Branca, with the cello quartet, the Octopus, and frequent concerts organized through the improv collective, Impakt, of which he was a founding member.
