Red Hen

Introducing Red Hen

Red Hen is a “new” Old Time Band that dips into a blended palette of old time, country and bluegrass, with a few Celtic roots showing. Their repertoire is traditionally based with an old time twist, mixed with the award winning new tunes and songs by written by band members Jane Rothfield and Allan Carr. Boasting four distinctive lead voices with great harmonies and instrumental excellence, Red Hen is acoustic Americana at its best. Red Hen is Jane Rothfield, Linda Schrade, Allan Carr and David Kiphuth.

The Band

Red Hen members Jane, Linda, David and Allan met in the mid 80’s and knew immediately that someday they would have a band together. Finally, after playing together non-stop for 9 days at the 2006 Clifftop Appalachian Mountain Festival (and winning the prize for Best Non-Traditional Tune), they realized they had a unique sound with their rich vocals, hot instrumentals and a bunch of fun. Red Hen was born.

Jane Rothfield (fiddle, banjo, vocals) Jane’s award winning fiddling adds fire and whimsy to the Red Hen sound. She moves easily from driving old time to country tunes to romantic Celtic melodies. Jane’s voice is clear and true, and adds a plaintive note to Red Hen. Jane doubles on banjo as well.

Linda Schrade (vocals, guitar)
Linda’s pure voice and expressive singing goes right to the heart, and has a powerful quality that stops people in their tracks. Whether singing lead or harmony, her voice rises to the top. Linda’s guitar work with Red Hen defines their solid groove.

Allan Carr (vocals, guitar, bass) Born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, Allan brings his amazing Celtic style guitar, bass playing and wonderful voice to the Americana music of Red Hen. His originals songs and arrangements are essential to the band sound.

David Kiphuth (bluegrass and old time banjo, dobjo, vocals) “Lonesome” Dave is an outstanding bluegrass, old time banjo player and singer. His tasty playing is unrivaled for backing up a singer and on blazing tunes. David’s high and lonesome voice lends a true mountain flavor to Red Hen.
